Après une longue série de jours fériés en Corée (dont Chuseok et le Jour du Hangeul), j’ai eu l’occasion de visiter une exposition qui m’a vraiment touchée : celle de Frida Kahlo. 🎨

It’s been a long stretch of holidays here in Korea — the weekend, National Foundation Day, Chuseok (our harvest festival), and Hangeul Day, which celebrates the creation of the Korean alphabet!

During the break, I got to visit an exhibition that truly stayed with me — the Frida Kahlo Replica Exhibition. 🎨

C’est ce que ma mère m’a proposé, juste après notre séance de natation du matin.

That’s what my mom said, right after our morning swim.

Quelques jours plus tôt, j’avais parlé d’une exposition dont j’avais reçu le message du centre culturel.

Ma mère s’en souvenait.

Rien n’était prévu.

I’d mentioned it a few days earlier — just a text from the cultural center about the show.

She remembered.

Nothing was planned.

And yet, somehow, that spontaneous little decision turned into one of those quiet, perfect days. 🙂

Avant de regarder les toiles, ma mère s’est arrêtée devant la chronologie de la vie de Frida.

Before looking at any of the paintings, my mom stopped in front of Frida’s timeline.

She read it slowly — as if every word truly mattered.

For her, Frida Kahlo wasn’t a familiar name.

J’avais vu un documentaire sur sa vie, il y a longtemps.

Je ne me souviens plus du titre, mais je n’ai jamais oublié son visage, ni son regard.

I’d seen a documentary about her life long ago — can’t recall the title, but I still remember her face, her eyes. 😊

How could I forget her?

A woman so complex, contradictory, and fiercely alive — someone who never fit into any box, simply herself.

Ma mère connaissait seulement quelques photos célèbres, celles de Nickolas Muray, sans vraiment savoir qui elle était.

Though my mom knew a few of those famous portraits — the ones Nickolas Muray took of her — she didn’t really know who Frida was.

Her voice was a mix of surprise and tenderness.

She fell silent for a moment, then went back to reading.

My mom wasn’t looking for the artist.

She was seeing the woman first.

Presque chaque tableau est un autoportrait.

Son visage revient sans cesse, mais jamais exactement le même.

Almost every painting was her own face — again and again, but never quite the same.

Little by little, you start hearing her voice through the canvas — pain, anger, and that fragile peace.

Je sens qu’elle peignait pour survivre, et surtout pour se sentir pleinement vivante.

I felt like she painted not just to survive, but to truly feel alive.

I happened to be looking at the same painting as them.

Et c’est vrai, pour un enfant, certaines œuvres de Frida peuvent impressionner. 😲

Je me suis dit que, moi aussi, à cet âge-là, j’aurais eu la même réaction.

And she was right — for a child, some of Frida’s works can be overwhelming.

I thought, if I were her age, I’d probably have felt the same.

Sa mère s’est penchée vers elle et lui a expliqué calmement que Frida avait eu un grave accident, qu’elle avait subi de nombreuses opérations, et qu’elle peignait pour exprimer cette douleur qui ne passait jamais.

Her mom leaned down and gently told her that Frida had a terrible accident, went through many surgeries, and that she painted to express a pain that never really went away.

C’est pour ça, lui a-t-elle dit, que ses tableaux peuvent sembler tristes ou durs.

“That’s why her paintings can look sad or intense,” she said softly.

Et j’ai trouvé ce moment entre elles très précieux, parce que grâce à sa mère, la petite pouvait comprendre un peu mieux ce qu’elle voyait.

I found that moment between them so precious — the girl could now see the paintings with a little more understanding, thanks to her mom.


"Where you cannot love, do not stay"

Ce n’étaient que des répliques.

They were replicas — not originals.

But the emotion was still there.

Je crois que le fait que ce soient des copies m’a aidée à la regarder autrement, à voir sa douleur sans détourner le regard.

I think the fact that they weren’t real helped me see her differently — to face her pain without looking away.

At the end, it said:

The last piece in the exhibition carried that title — Viva la vida, her own work.

Il y a des mots qui résonnent plus fort dans certaines langues.

Pour moi, c’est l’espagnol.

Some words just resonate more deeply in certain languages.

For me, it’s Spanish.

Je ne le parle pas bien, mais Viva la vida sonne différemment : pas comme un slogan joyeux, mais comme le cri de quelqu’un qui refuse de lâcher prise.

I don’t actually speak it well, but Viva la vida feels different — not like a cheerful slogan, but like the cry of someone who refuses to let go.

Sa douleur n’a jamais cessé, et pourtant elle n’a jamais quitté la vie.

Her pain never stopped, yet she never turned away from life.

Ses tableaux montrent tout ça : la souffrance, la fatigue, mais aussi la volonté de rester vivante.

À la fin de l’exposition, il y a une petite salle vidéo.

Le documentaire Frida, vie éternelle y est projeté chaque jour à 11h, 13h30 et 15h30.

At the end of the exhibition, there’s a small screening room.

The documentary Frida, Life Eternal plays there every day at 11:00, 1:30, and 3:30 PM.

Si vous voulez le voir, mieux vaut commencer par là : la salle se trouve juste avant la sortie.

If you’d like to see it, it’s best to start there — the room is right near the exit.

Et juste après, un espace créatif vous attend : des feuilles à colorier avec les portraits de Frida, des crayons, du papier de couleur, des ciseaux, de la colle…

Just after that, there’s a creative corner with coloring sheets of Frida’s portraits, colored pencils, paper, scissors, and glue.

Les enfants adorent, et les adultes aussi s’y mettent sérieusement.

Kids love it, and plenty of adults join in too.

On en a fait un nous aussi.

We made one as well.

Vous pouvez repartir avec votre dessin, ou le coller avec ceux des autres visiteurs — nous, on l’a laissé là, bien en vue. 🙂

Je crois que c’est la plus jolie façon de terminer la visite.

You can take your drawing home or leave it on the wall with everyone else’s — we left ours there, in plain view. 🙂

I think it’s the loveliest way to end the visit.

L’exposition se tient jusqu’au 19 octobre seulement : une occasion à ne pas manquer si vous êtes à Busan.

Et pourquoi ne pas prolonger la promenade au Mémorial des Nations Unies ou au Musée de Busan, juste à côté ?

The exhibition runs until October 19 — a chance not to be missed if you’re in Busan.

And while you’re there, why not take a short walk to the UN Memorial Cemetery or the Busan Museum, just next door?

On one of the walls, right at the end of the exhibition, there were Post-its with this prompt printed on them:

Visitors filled in their own thoughts.

J’en ai lu quelques-uns.

Some were funny, others unexpectedly deep.

Je suis chez moi, et malgré tout j’ai envie de rentrer.

Ces petites phrases m’ont semblé sincères, pleines de vie — chacune, à sa manière, très “Frida”.

They felt honest and full of life — each one, in its own way, a little bit Frida.
